Students may participate in study abroad anytime after freshman year (or completing 24 college credits post completion of high school)
Note: Students may apply to a program during freshman year, but must have completed freshman year in good standing to participate in the program.
About Program
Summer in Aix-en-Provence, France
Voted by the French as "the most desired French town to live in," Aix-en-Provence is graced with numerous fountains, narrow winding streets, and beautiful old buildings. Though small, Aix is equipped with all the modern facilities of a larger city and is bustling with life and an amazing ambiance.
Taste the cuisine provençale at local markets, discover many international restaurants, and engage in the favorite Aixois activity, people-watching, from Les Deux Garçons, the favorite café of Paul Cézanne and Emile Zola. Getaway to Paris on only a three-hour train ride. Explore the city's vibrant nightlife and shop the elegant boutiques and foires aux artisans, open-air markets where French artists display their work.

Academics
IAU College
Courses will be taught in French and English and vary depending on which CEA Aix program you select. Click on the specific program options below to view course offerings, syllabi, and more on the CEA website:
- Liberal Arts & Business (select the 2 or 3 course option) 6-9 credits
Choose from a wide range of subjects from business to communication, art history to psychology, education to humanities. Most elective courses are taught in English. A French language course is highly encouraged but not required during the summer. - Studio Art (select the 2 or 3 course option) 6-9 credits
IAU’s Marchutz School of Art offers a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to studio art for students from a range of art backgrounds and experiences. Choose a 2- or 3-course program. Students in the 2-course program enroll in 1 art criticism/aesthetics course and 1 painting & drawing course; students in the 3-course program also enroll in 1 elective course - Study + Internship - 6 credits
Students must have completed at least 4 semesters of language at the college level and must demonstrate oral and written proficiency in foreign language.
With this option, simultaneously intern, take the International Internship course, and take an additional elective course at IAU. - Internship - 6 credits
Students must have completed at least 4 semesters of language at the college level and must demonstrate oral and written proficiency in foreign language.
Simultaneously intern at your host organization and take the International Internship course at IAU.

If you do not see a cost estimate for the semester/term you intend to go abroad, the cost has not yet been determined. Please note cost estimates and fees may change depending on international economic factors. UMD Study Abroad delays the posting of final fees until enrollments, inflation, and exchange rates are determined in order to provide students with the most accurate pricing. We strive to post final fees by October 1 for Spring programs, March 1 for May/Summer programs, and May 1 for Fall and Academic year programs.

Housing
Housing can vary, but typically includes homestays and apartments. To help you fully immerse in the culture and language, homestays are recommended. Each family has been carefully selected. Apartment details can vary from double to single rooms. More details can be found on the CEA website.
Travel Documents
- You are required to have a passport to participate in this program. If you do not have a passport or your passport will expire within 6 months after you will return from abroad, apply for a passport as soon as possible. It can take 2+ months to receive your passport after applying. You can apply for a new passport on-campus at the UMD Passport Acceptance Facility.
- Visa guidance will be provided by CEA.
- Roundtrip airfare should only be purchased after official acceptance from the foreign university is issued.

A $50 non-refundable application fee will be billed to your One Stop account upon submission of an application.
After you apply
- After approximately 20 minutes, you will see checklist items for you to complete.
- All application checklist items need to be submitted by the application deadline which is noted near the top of the page.
- Your UMD Program Contact will review your application materials.
- You must complete the Confirmation of Participation form to confirm your participation.
- Once we receive your confirmation, your UMD account will be billed a confirmation deposit.
If you decide you cannot participate, you must log in to the online application system and submit the "Cancellation Request form."
