About the Program

The Ireland Internship program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in an internship during the summer in one of Europe’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities. An internship is the most effective way of gaining in-depth practical experience in museum studies, and students may complete internships in three museums in Ireland:

Dublin: Irish National Labour Museum and Archive

Ennis: County Clare Museum

Galway: Galway City Museum

Academics

HIST/MST 3097 Internship - 3 credits

This course is approved to count for:

  • General History elective
  • Public History core requirement
  • Museum Studies certificate
  • Liberal Education: Global Perspective

Travel Documents

Get a passport right on campus! Processing times vary, but it can take several weeks to a few months to receive one. If you already have a passport, make sure its expiration date goes at least 6 months beyond the end date of your program so it's valid the entire time you're abroad.

Program Instructors

David Woodward

David Woodward David has spent the past 25 years working in the fields of public history, historic preservation, museology, and archaeology in both the public and private realms. He has conducted research abroad in Poland, Guatemala, Mexico and domestically in the Midwest. David also holds appointments in African and African American Studies. He currently serves as the Director of the Museum Studies Certificate Program. His research interests include: Oral History, Folklore and Folk Culture, Legacies of Slavery in the Atlantic world, Native American and European contact period in the U.S., Landscape Archaeology, Material Culture studies, and cultural/historical interpretation.

Steve Matthews, Ph.D. Steven Matthews received his Ph.D. in European History from the University of Florida, and has been at U.M.D. since the Fall of 2004.  He specializes in medieval European history as well as the history of Christianity and the history of science.  He is the co-founder of the Museum Studies and Public History programs at U.M.D, and is currently doing research in the history and archaeology of western Ireland.
