Consult with One Stop to learn about when and how aid is disbursed, scholarship opportunities, and loan information. They can guide you with money matters and budget samples. When meeting with them, it's helpful to bring a program cost estimate (available on our program web pages) with you.
Winter break and May session financial aid information
When determining financial aid take note that:
- Winter Break is considered part of the spring semester
- May Session is considered part of Summer session
For May and Summer term programs, you must take a total of 6 credits during that term for financial aid to apply. E.g. if you participate in a 3-credit May program, you will have to take a 3-credit summer class in order to be considered for financial aid.
UMD Study Abroad Scholarship
The UMD Study Abroad Scholarship offers award amounts that range from $750–$2,500. Instructions, eligibility, and details are on the application form:

General Funding Opportunities
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Preference is given to students studying outside of Western Europe and Australia. View these videos for tips on the application process.
Boren Awards for International Study
Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to United States interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central, and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The award includes an additional requirement of federal service following graduation.
CIEE Scholarship
CIEE continues to lead international education providers in study abroad awards - with more than $8 million offered annually. CIEE offers both grants and scholarships to students studying abroad. The programs feature extensive need-based awards, merit scholarships, open campus grants (including special opportunities in Latin America), and grants for students attending Minority Serving Institutions.
Fulbright Scholarship
Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.
Fund for Education Abroad
The Fund for Education Abroad accepts applications from undergraduate students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study abroad population. Scholarships of up to $10,000 are awarded to support students planning to participate in credit-bearing, high-quality, rigorous education programs abroad.
Gilman-McCain Scholarship
The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Developed under the framework of the State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the John McCain International Scholarship for the Children of Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is open to eligible students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid.
Go Overseas Scholarships
Go Overseas gives away $175,000 in scholarships every year.
Katherine E. Sullivan
The Katherine E. Sullivan Scholarship supports a full year of study abroad for students who will have completed at least 120 credits of academic work and will have finished all graduation requirements by the end of the proposed study abroad experience. Students who are in their third year of undergraduate education are especially encouraged to apply
Rotary Scholarships
The Rotary Foundation offers scholarship opportunities through district, global, and packaged grants. You must be a member of a Rotary club to be eligible.
Udall Scholarship
Expected to award 50 scholarships of up to $7,000 to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment.

SWEDEN | The Jessie Lokrantz Scholarship
Based on academic excellence and commitment to improving humankind, this scholarship is awarded to an American woman studying or conducting research in Sweden. Founded in 1982, AWC has been issuing funds to women via the Jessie Lokrantz Scholarship to share the Swedish culture with women from around the world.
SWEDEN | Lilly Lorénzen Scholarship
Offered to Minnesota residents, the American Swedish Institute scholarship is for students who plan to carry out scholarly and/or creative studies in Sweden. Applicants must have a working knowledge of the Swedish language, a serious desire to make a contribution to American-Swedish cultural exchange, and demonstrable achievement in the selected field of study.

Most financial aid and scholarship money can be applied to study abroad, including scholarships that aren't originally intended for study abroad. For non-study abroad-specific scholarships, we recommend you inquire directly with the scholarship provider to ensure that award can be applied toward your study abroad experience.
