Program Overview
- Population of Luleå: 75,000
- Distance to Stockholm: 453 miles
- Distance to Helsinki: 538 miles
Luleå, located in northern Sweden, lies on the Gulf of Bothnia and at the mouth of the Lule River. Even though it sits a mere 70 miles south of the Arctic Circle, the city experiences a climate similar to northern Minnesota. Likewise, the region is one of the best to witness the Aurora Borealis. Luleå is home to the most popular shopping district in Sweden, Smedjan, with over 6 miles of shops that run through the downtown area. The city is also home to Facebook’s first data center outside of the U.S. The center is on par to be the most efficient and sustainable data station in the world. Lastly, be sure to visit the Ice Hotel in nearby Jukkasjärvi, Sweden.
Luleå University of Technology (LTU) is Sweden’s northernmost university. Founded in 1971, it is a modern research university with 19,000 students, including over 400 international exchange students. The university prides itself on building an attractive, sustainable society. Learn from faculty conducting significant and high-quality research that is progressive on a national and international scale.

Academics
Luleå University of Technology
At Luleå University of Technology (LTU) classes are most often taken one or two at a time. When selecting courses, look at which quarter and module the course is offered in. Semesters are split into two quarters: fall term includes quarters 1 and 2, while spring term includes quarters 3 and 4. To avoid time conflicts, don't select courses with the same modules in the same quarter. Applicants will need to meet course prerequisites regardless of the level of the course.
LTU uses the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Divide ECTS credits in half to identify the equivalent number of UMD credits. Classes are typically 7.5 ECTS credits and enrollment in 30 ECTS is considered full-time. Understand how your grades abroad will convert at UMD by viewing the Swedish University Grade & Credit Equivalents.
- View current LTU course offerings. Keep in mind, the following areas are restricted for exchange students: health science, performing arts (theater, dance), and education.
