Exchange Costs & Insurance

Cost Estimates

As an exchange student attending UMD, you do not pay tuition. This is due to the official agreement between your university and UMD.

However, you are responsible for housing and other expenses. Depending on which courses you choose, you could also be charged course fees. Here is an estimated cost of attendance at UMD based on the UMD Financial Aid Office, effective 2024–25:

Expense ItemsEstimated Amount per Semester
Books & Supplies$500
Housing & Food$5,105
Transportation (after arrival)$175
Personal Expenses/Miscellaneous $1,000
University of Minnesota Insurance (mandatory)$1,795*
U.S. Visa Fees$510 (You may also incur transportation costs for travel to the nearest U.S. Embassy consulate for your visa interview)
*TOTAL*$9,085

* All costs listed are subject to change.

UMD charges will be due after the semester begins in accordance with UMD billing and payment due dates (exception: the housing deposit will be due at the time of application).

Fees

As an exchange student, you may be charged additional fees for specific courses, for example, MU 1312: Voice Non-Major (voice lessons). Class fees can be viewed on the Onestop website. Fees are listed by the course designator (e.g. MU = Music). Course fees are only covered if they pertain to your degree.

UMD Study Abroad pays the collegiate and student services fees for exchange students. This includes access to Health Services and the Recreation Center, both are located on campus. Exchange students do not pay student services fees at UMD due to the short duration of your study. Therefore, some services may not be available to you.

Health Care

The University of Minnesota mandates that all international students enroll in the Student Health Benefit Plan (SHBP). Enrollment in the plan is automatic; you will not need to take action and the fee will be billed to you during your semester(s) at UMD. You will be required to pay for any medical costs not covered by insurance.

Dental Plan

Preventative and Periodontal dental benefits are included in the SHBP and you'll automatically be enrolled. However, restorative services are not included. If you wish to include restorative services, enroll in their optional coverage for an extra fee. The additional fee will be billed to your UMD student account following UMD billing dates and deadlines.
