About the Program
Program Highlights
- Rome: Unpack nearly 2,700 years of community/public health practices within this pulsating metropolis through the Forum, Rome’s key political/civic center; The Baths of Caracalla, Antiquity’s wellness epicenter; Explore Michelangelo's famous artwork in the Sistine Chapel and masterpieces of the Vatican Museum. Take in a cooking class from a Michelin-star chef.
Free time to explore the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, St. Peter's Basilica or stroll like the locals through Piazza Navona.
- Florence: Experience the rebirth of community/public health practices within the city known as the Birthplace of Renaissance through Mercy Museum, which chronicles the Misericordia’s charitable work since 1244; Foundation for Photo/Art in Hospitals’ current philanthropic endeavors; and the surprising connection between The David and community health. Learn the health connections to world class art while gaining insights into various cultures.
- Siena: Time travel through a 'Medieval Masterpiece', the town of Siena, and visit a former thousand-year-old hospital (now a museum) that set the standard for beauty, organization, and function in all of Europe. Enjoy a multi-course meal 'Under the Tuscan Sun' at a sustainable farm amidst stunning panoramic landscapes dotted with vineyards and rolling hills. A student (and faculty) favorite!
Academics
Prerequisites:
- Minimum 2.5 GPA
- 30 credit minimum and instructor approval
- Students may participate in study abroad anytime after freshman year (or completing 24 college credits post completion of high school). Note: students may apply to a program during freshman year but must have completed freshman year in good standing to participate in the program.
Intersections of Public Health and Art in Italy (ILSA 4100/5100), 3 credits
Course Topics:
- Actively engage in activities that ignite intellectual curiosity, spark passion for exploration, and fuel a deep desire to experience another culture while recognizing similarities and differences
- Engage in various discussions and complete reflection papers/journals while in Italy
- Interpret art through the lens of health in written format
- Choose one or more topics from selected course content, develop a paper around said topic, and deliver an oral presentation onsite in Italy
This course is approved to count for:
- HLTH 4100 - Upper-division elective for Public Health majors
- HLTH 5100 - Graduate-level elective
- Liberal Education: Global Perspectives category
Cost Information
Use this cost estimate to help calculate expenses and budget for your study abroad program. This includes all program fees billed to your UMD student account and necessary out-of-pocket expenses. Please note that cost estimates and fees may change depending on international economic factors. We will post final fees once enrollments, inflation, and exchange rates are determined in order to provide the most accurate pricing. We strive to post final fees by October 1 for Winter and Spring programs, March 1 for May/Summer programs, and May 1 for Fall and Academic Year programs. This cost does not include the $50 application fee.

- Note: Credits taken on study abroad programs cannot be used toward the Bulldog Bundle.
Travel Documents
Get a passport right on campus! Processing times vary, but it can take several weeks to a few months receive one. If you already have a passport, make sure its expiration date goes at least 6 months beyond the end date of your program so it's valid the entire time you're abroad.

Lisa Vogelsang, PhD, taught at UMD in the Public Health department as well as Psychology for several years and is a two-time Olympic athlete. She is also an artist (photographer, singer, musician) with scholarship in arts and health.

A $50 non-refundable application fee will be billed to your One Stop account upon submission of an application.
After you apply
- After approximately 20 minutes, you will see checklist items for you to complete.
- All application checklist items need to be submitted by the application deadline which is noted near the top of the page.
- Your UMD Program Contact will review your application materials.
- You must complete the Confirmation of Participation form to confirm your participation.
- Once we receive your confirmation, your UMD account will be billed a confirmation deposit.
If you decide you cannot participate, you must log in to the online application system and submit the "Cancellation Request form."
